This reminds me of one of the video lessons in this year's Sketchbook Revival - did you take part? The lesson was on lettering but one of her suggestions was to paint different colored squares in your sketchbook, ready as background when you wanted to practice your lettering or capture a phrase or quotation. And here's another idea for filling those squares - doodling! Really fun. :-)
